Another fabulous McConnell book!
Review to come.

This book offers a fantastic training program for reactive dogs. Start at the very lowest level of reaction, create a positive association with whatever it is that creates the anxiety and work from there. I know first hand that when your dog reacts, it's easy to let yourself also get anxious and excited. After reading this book, you can stay calm and stay in control of the situation so that you can best help your dog. Sully (Pembroke Welsh Corgi) was fear aggressive toward dogs and severely shy..more

I love the way McConnell writes. She is simply, straightforward, humourous, and absolutely accessible. I picked up an ecopy of this to refresh myself on classical counter conditioning because it's the most simple how to I've ever seen for counter conditioning in fearful dogs and the most accessible.

Given to me by my cousin when asking about dog training and behavior management. Very simplistic but very informational and straight forward. This was a very short read but I think it was just the right length for everything the author wanted to say. No fluff, no crap, just the tools and techniques for training. She gave examples and made sure the advice was open enough for any situation your scared dog is in. Recommend it to anyone worried about there dog's anxiety and wanting some training tip..more

Helping a reactive dog
Although I currently do not have my own dog I am volunteering at a dog rescue and several have dog on dog problems and want to try to help them so maybe they can be adopted. Also since I will be adopting a dog in the future I want to be prepared should it be a reactive dog. This book has shown me it is possible to train a dog to get along with other dogs and strangers. How much better for the dog and owner. Never give up.

This is a very short book (30 pages) with no illustrations and no extra text. It's great if you already have a foundation with dog training and are at least somewhat familiar with the idea of triggers and rewards. But I would probably recommend reading Behavior Adjustment Training (B.A.T.) by Grisha Stewart if you're not.

Great little guide for helping your cautious or reactive dog to learn to be calm and focussed. Pat's to the point writing style makes the delivery of her training concepts easy to read and learn. A recommended read for dog trainers and dog owners.
Nice booklet on all that I have researched about how to train a fearful dog - Watch me, Distract/Mark/Treat, etc

A very useful technique that I used to help a puppy overcome her fear of other dogs.

Short and simple
This aligns with everything that our trainers have told us. We use the techniques in our big dog who is afraid of strangers and it's worked pretty well so far.

This is one of Patricia McConnell's 'booklets' that focuses in on one issue or another. 'The Cautious Canine' is a step by step dog training treatment plan for fearful dogs. Through several books as well as working with a professional trainer, we have concluded that Baylie has one of the sweetest personalities who wants very hard to please us, but she is just a fearful little dog. Add that to the 'Terrier' in her and now we understand why she is snappy at times. She has the mindset, 'I'm gonna g..more

This short booklet by Patricia McConnell packs a lot of punch and is well worth the brief amount of time it will take you to read. The Cautious Canine specifically addresses the treatment of behaviors stemming from fear in your dog using a classical counter conditioning technique. The treatment she lays out is, nominally, to work with dogs that are afraid of people but it can easily be adapted to any fear based behavior.

While this book didn't really help all that much so far, it did reinforce most of the things I learned while taking doggie classes. It also gave me a few new ideas, but didn't really address what to do when the trigger is outside of your control. I can't really remove Kirby from thunderstorms when they happen. Nor can I really simulate them on a lower level..though I might try a recording of thunder. Or maybe I could just always give Kirby a treat if he does something constructive after a clap..more

I just wish this book was 200 pages longer! Solid advice on how to train and rehabilitate your fearful dog, from my hero in the dog-training world. Patricia McConnell, you can do no wrong in my book. The booklet provides a step-by-step training plan to counter-condition your dog to its fears and gradually work on eliminating them completely. (The cover photo is appropriate, too. That GSD looks a lot like ours..)

Great info! My dog is mildly nervous of strangers and intact male dogs. We've come along way since his fear period from 6 months to one year but I think the info in this booklet with help conquer my dog's nervousness. I tend to shield him from situations he doesn't like rather then teach him that it's ok. Very interesting and quick read.

A quick 30 page read that shows you step by step how to get your dog over being fearful of people. This technique can be applied to other fears as well.
Very useful, but you have to be willing to put forth the effort, and it may be a whole lot of effort. I haven't gone through the training with my dog yet, but it looks like it would work.

I first came across this book in a dog trainer class, but it ended up invaluable to us as we have a fearful/reactive dog. It had helpful tips and insight and good processes to go through to counter-condition reactions. As mentioned in another review the editing was poor, but the content makes it worth the rating.

The Cautious Canine by Patricia McConnell is a non-fiction book about how to help dogs conquer their fears. This book did not help me at all. The exercises did not work and I attempted them everyday for over a month. No changes occurred. I believe books like these should not lump every dog with the problem together. I've been told yorkies train differently.

I wish this was longer and gave more specific advice. It talks about fear-based bad behavior, and how to help your dog get past it. (Mainly, feed treats when the dog is exposed to a very low level of whatever she's afraid of, then slowly up the exposure). But each dog is probably so specific that it's hard to write a general manual.
The author obviously has done a lot of research on the subject. She has sound advice for those who find themselves with a cautious canine. I find that I use it as a reference for next steps with my cautious canine.
Terrific book. McConnell provides another readable, doable dog training book. I worked this program with my dog and saw great improvement. Short and concise it works for novices as well as experienced dog handlers.

This gives you a very good overview of the counterconditioning process for any dog that is reactive because of fear. It's easy to read, clear, concise and has a handy numbered step and summary format.
Note it is a booklet and is twenty something pages. I read it in one sitting.

A lot of great information, tips and ideas, though perhaps not clear or simplified enough for the average dog parent with little to no dog behavioral experience. Typos and formatting errors throughout - the editor needs to be kicked in the seat!

Really really good resource, super accessible and very practical. Our dog trainer recommended it for our fearful dog and it was so applicable to what we're dealing with.

Fantastic book - not sure yet if the methods will work for us, but we'll be trying them out!
Great instructional booklet- although there is no fix for my crazy dog. This is a clear outline of what to do and when.

The usual start far away, mark and reward behavior you like. The example in the book is fear-based reactions to humans. Good to see it all lined out.

This booklet provides a step-by-step dog training program of desensitizing and counter classical conditioning. It can help you solve minor dog problems and prevent serious ones, whether your dog's fears include the vacuum cleaner, people with hats, or the stranger at the door. Covered are the oh-so-important details related to identifying exactly what triggers your dog, creating a step-by-step treatment plan, monitoring your progress, and why you need to treat the fear and not just your dog's reaction to the fear.
